I would like to thank everyone who has supported my business over the last few years -- both the customers and the retailers who stock my designs. I recently received a Young Entrepreneur Award college scholarship from the National Federation of Independent Business for my work here at emmasews. Thank you!
My favorite things are sewing, rock climbing, and animals-- especially elephants! My sewing projects bring together all of the things I love.
I've been lucky to be able to climb all over the world. This picture is Sands of Time, a 5.10 multipitch route at the Paarl district near Cape Town, South Africa. I have also been climbing in Australia, China, Hong Kong, and Thailand.
Elephants are my favorite creature, with cats a close second. I'm guessing that my cats are happy they are the only pets at our house! We have seen wild elephants in many places, including Borneo, Botswana, and South Africa. This photo is of me giving an elephant named Princess a bath at a conservation center in Thailand. This center is one of the projects that I sponsor with donations from my sales. The Elephant Hospital is funded solely by donations, and treats elephants who have been abused, neglected, or injured. Proceeds from chalkbag sales have help purchase medicine for elephants like the one in the photo below, whose foot was badly injured by a landmine.

I also support the Phoenix Zoo with donations from sales. I work at the zoo as well, as a volunteer keeper. I work mainly with African animals, including giraffes, warthogs, rhinos, and lots of different hoofstock. In the past, I have taken care of monkeys and wallabies too. The zoo has a great volunteer program for high school students called Zoo Teens. Click here for more information on volunteer opportunities.
Another program that I support based on sales is the Aquarium of the Pacific, in Long Beach, California. They have a great collection of both warm and cold water creatures. Click here for the aquarium's web page.
In addition to supporting wildlife, I also donate chalkbags as prizes for different climbing competitions, including the Prescott AZ Bizkit Bash, the Arizona State Games, Phoenix Rock Gym's Thrash and Dangle competition, and USA Climbing Youth Nationals. I supported the first conference for the International Association of Giraffe Care Professionals, held at the Phoenix Zoo in February 2010. I donated embroidered feed bags as prizes for the fund raiser auction:
